About UK’s Education System

Education in the UK is different for each of its devolved regions with each of the countries of the United Kingdom having separate/different systems under separate governments. Thus, the UK Government has the responsibility for England. The Scottish Government, the Welsh Government and the Northern Ireland governments have the responsibility for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively. In each of these countries, there are in all five stages/phases/steps of education: early years/stage, primary, secondary, Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE).

Education in the UK is obligatory/mandatory for all children who are aged between 5 (4 in Northern Ireland) and 16.  Earlier to this, children can be educated at the nursery. FE is non-compulsory (non-obligatory), and covers non-advanced education which can be undertaken at further or more advanced (including tertiary) education colleges and HE institutions (HEIs). The fifth and final stage, HE, is study undertaken beyond GCE A levels (and their equivalent) which, for most full-time students, is undertaken in universities and other HEIs and colleges. Thus, education in the UK is very elaborately set up.
